Scheduled performances during the restoration include Indian-American Comedy Night at 8:00 P.M. The lobby, bathrooms, and infrastructure have been completed and plans for the interior of the theater include a new chandelier and restoration of the original decorative wall treatments. The interior of the theater is also undergoing a total restoration while remaining open of a wide variety of performances for all ages. Electrification and control wiring of the marquee and blade sign is being accomplished by DeWitt Van Nest Electrical Contractors. The plans were submitted to and approved by SCCAC, the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission, and the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). has served as the Historic Preservation Consultant and coordinated the plans for restoration of the marquee and blade sign, prepared by Cerminara Architects. In lieu of the two marquee message boards above the sidewalk, that were originally changed manually with hand-placed letters, digital video boards will announce the theatre’s coming events.
Fabrication will take 3 months and include installation of the historic 1,130 programmable light bulbs in the original 1927 blue and yellow colors.
Funding for the restoration was provided by the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders.īoth the 16-foot tall vertical “BROOK” blade sign and the 3-sided marquee are being fabricated by Bartush Signs of Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania. This work is expected to be complete by June 4, 2010. The sidewalk entrance will receive a stucco finish and the structural steel that held up the 1927 marquee will be cleaned and painted. Though the end of the decade signaled the beginning of the end for vaudeville, the Brook continued as home to a wide variety of live performances and movies throughout the years. Opening night featured two movies and five Vaudeville acts, playing to a packed house of 1,500 guests (200 standing in the lobby, watching the shows over the balustrade).
